Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport is the 17th busiest in the world and it is now gearing up for a major expansion.

The expansion plans for Delhi's lone passenger airport include a new terminal, an additional runway, state-of-the-art facilities and an enhanced passenger handling capacity, reported HT.

On completion of the expansion project, Delhi airport will be the country's first airport with four runway and the airport's passenger handling capacity will also increase from 20 million passengers a year to 40 million.

Under the expansion plans, the Delhi airport will get a new Terminal, T4, which is expected to be completed by 2025. Delhi currently has three terminals T1, T2 which cater to domestic flights and T3, which caters to both domestic and international flights. The new terminal, T4 will be used only for international travellers and is expected to reduce traffic at T3.

To help improve traffic circulation, Terminal 1 will be expanded to increase its total area post which additional lanes will be added to the departure ramp of T1. To separate the heavy vehicle movement from passenger vehicles, a corridor for cargo movement in and out of the airport will also be built.

The Delhi Airport is set to get it fourth runway by 2022, under the expansion plans. The per-hour flight handling capacity of the airport is expected to increase with the addition of the fourth runway. It will also reduce the waiting time for departing as well as approaching flights.

The T1 and T3 terminals will see the addition of new taxiways. The airport will also get a first-of-its-kind ‘dual elevated cross taxiway’ with the objective of reducing the aircraft's taxiing time.

Terminal 3's international transfer area will be expanded and the terminal will get an addition of a seventh check-in island.
