Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal has hit out at leaders from AAP, BJP and Congress for disrespecting women. She tweeted: “Somnath, Cong's Kamat or BJP's Bidhuri, my strong advice to all leaders from whichever party- Respect women! Disrespect won't b tolerated!”

Congress leader Gurudas Kamat had taken a shot at Smriti Irani when he mocked her background. He had said: “Her family's financial condition was not good, therefore, she worked in a hotel in Versova. Since Smriti was only 10th pass, she used to mop floors."

Meanwhile, BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri also faced criticism for his sexist remarks against women in Parliament. Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan officially lodged a complaint and was quoted saying: “He has been abusive with me at least three to four times earlier as well. There was this instance during the Budget speech discussion when I talked of the need to give benefits to single women and he turned around saying I should divorce my husband first and then such benefits can be given to me. Today also his jibes continued. I have been ignoring this for a while but he is using language against women that is unbecoming of an MP.”

Meanwhile, Somnath Bharti, whose wife has accused him of domestic violence, was in the news after he made a comment about AAP taking over the Delhi Police. He had said: "I am fully confident that if Delhi government is given full freedom (over security), beautiful women will be able to go out even after midnight without any fear."

Later, he issued a clarification on Facebook that didn't read much better, "I request media friends not to twist my statement: I have said 'beautiful women laden with jewelries can (sic) travel at midnight fearlessly is the kind of benchmark one can measure security level at Delhi against, if AAP has police control'."  Exactly, how the jewellery bit improves the statement is something we are still trying to understand.
