He also said that the Commission will ensure that vigilance work is moving seamlessly.
The Central Vigilance Commission's priorities would be to reduce the areas of corruption and to check delays in deciding corruption cases, its new chief KV Chowdary on Wednesday said.
"There is need to improve preventive vigilance mechanism in the various departments which report to us. As prevention is better than cure," he said. The Commission will ensure that vigilance work is moving seamlessly, he said.
"So we would like to look at that and suggest to various ministries which are looked after by their Chief Vigilance Officers to streamline them (work) so that we reduce the areas of corruption," he said. According to Chowdary, the second important work for him is that "we would like to bring down the time gap between the date of detection of offence or a misconduct as they call and the date on which it is taken to a logical conclusion".
"Of late it is not uncommon to notice that it takes anything like 10 years or more in some cases before a case is finalised if a person who is involved in that case, if he is found to be guilty, we have had such a guilty person on our role for such a long time for no reason but mainly due to delay."
"Whereas on other hand if the officer is not to be found guilty and he is acquitted there, he has been unnecessarily harassed in the meantime. He would have foregone his promotions and various benefits. We would like to cut that," he said. The former chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes was sworn in as new Central Vigilance Commissioner by President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday.
