To inculcate the essence of hard work, education and success in the youth, Chairman of Essel Group, Dr Subhash Chandra is now bringing forth his years of experience and success stories on a larger platform with his new show on Zee News. The show is intended to benefit today's generation and Dr. Subhash Chandra took up an important subject to deal with - creativity, on the second episode of his show.
Calling it the greatest rebellion in existence today, Dr Chandra addressed the youth, heard them and tried channeling his experience to bring out some solutions and give answers to their queries.
In the last episode, you said you quit those programs which fell below second position. But with creativity, risk comes in automatically. So between taking a risk for creativity and being in that position, what would you choose?
That is my criteria for success and that's fixed. I think about whether I want to become number one or a strong number two. But being creative is always a challenge. You have to be creative all the time. Creativity is of a single individual. But when you convert that into a business atmosphere, there are twenty other people working with you. Everybody cannot be creative. Then it goes out of the creative domain and reaches the business domain where you can fail or succeed.
Essel World was built on an island. How did such a creative idea strike you?
This is a matter of action and activity. When we are doing some activity that is not creative, it is a very mechanical, dead kind of activity. Creative is when you act! Essel World was part of that action. We purchased the land and the advocate told us that we cannot make anything other than an amusement park or a club house because it was a no development zone. So we took action and we said yes, we will build an amusement park. Action is the first step of creativity. That is how Essel world was created.
Is creativity inborn or can it be learnt?
First of all, my belief is that there is some kind of talent in all of us. There are different ways in which you are creative, as per the talent. Some people have the talent to speak well, they are born with it. Some children have good memory. These are talents. A child likes to play with cars and behave as if he is driving. The repeated pattern of behaviour is your talent. That is the talent you possess. Sometimes you don't know about it but notice that if your behaviour patterns are repeated, you can be creative there.
Were you creative from your childhood itself?
The thing you just asked is an evidence of mob mentality or a herd mentality. When you are in such a space, you cannot be creative. If I ask all of you about why you chose your profession, most of the answers would be my friend told me to do this. My friend went to that class so I went. My father or mother told me because they wanted me to be that. Herd mentality does not know how to sing, how to dance. If you start with collective wisdom and the law of average gain, many a times you won't be successful. The collective power is rewarded but to my mind, it is not an appealing thought. The collective mind is the lowest mind of them all.
In modern times, most organisations look for specialisations. But Essel Group has diversified into a range of activities. How did you manage this?
As I said in the beginning, a creative person is initially considered dumb and stupid. You need to forget your respect but once it is created, you are considered a genius. Even for us, it was not difficult. There was no rocket science that we applied. One thing followed the other. We let go off our conventional thinking and then we went ahead. We kept on with our actions, we questioned ourselves and that is how we created Essel. Creation is a part of action, not activity.
