New Delhi: If you are also paying a hospital bill through cash payment during the coronavirus pandemic, then this news is very important for you. The Income Tax Department on Wednesday announced that now a hospital bill of up to Rs 2 lakh can be deposited through cash. However, if you pay more than this, you will have to provide your PAN or Aadhar number.

Through a tweet, the department said that provisions of section 269ST of IT-Act have been relaxed to allow cash payments of more than Rs. 2 lakh to hospitals for Covid treatment if the PAN or Aadhaar of the payer is provided.

"CBDT has acted to facilitate patients during this pandemic. Provisions of section 269ST of ITAct have been relaxed to allow cash payments of more than Rs. 2 lakh to hospitals for Covid treatment if the PAN or Aadhaar of the payer is provided," read the tweet.

The department was referring to a new report claiming that the Ministry of Finance has asked the income-tax officers to put checks on hospitals and nursing homes that are taking cash payments for COVID-19 treatment.

Denying any such order, the department said that the news report is unsubstantiated and no such directive has been issued by the ministry.

"The Finance Ministry has not issued any directive to CBDT in this regard. Further, unlike as reported, the CBDT has not come out with any Circular where hospitals need to disclose the cash they receive to the IT Department," the department said.
