COVID-19 Outbreak: First case of coronavirus confirmed in West Bengal as bureaucrat's son tested positive

The affected person returned from the UK on March 15 and didn't go into quarantine.

West Bengal on Tuesday became the 16th state/UT to report a positive coronavirus infection case, taking the number of cases in the country to 140. 

Among the states, Maharashtra has the highest number of cases at 41, followed by Kerala at 29 (3 recovered).

The first case in West Bengal was recorded in Kolkata where an 18-year-old youth with a travel history to the United Kingdom has been tested positive. 

The affected person returned from the UK on March 15 and didn't go into quarantine. He only got admitted at Beleghata ID And Hospital on Tuesday and later tested positive. 

His parents and driver have been kept in isolation, they are being checked for any symptoms. He too has been kept in a separate ward in isolation.

The affected male is a son of a bureaucrat at the state's Home Department who works at Nabanna. 

The bureaucrat mother of the patient had been attending office at Nabanna - the Bengal state secretariat -  till Monday. The building houses the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Office, other ministries and departments.

With this, the number of novel coronavirus cases in the country rose to 140. Death of a patient who tested positive for COVID-19 was also reported in Maharashtra where the number of confirmed cases has jumped to 41.

Two persons with a travel history to the USA were tested positive, one each from in Pimpri-Chinchwad and Mumbai. 

The death of a 64-year-old man from took the nationwide death toll to three. The deceased, admitted at civic-run Kasturba Hospital in Mumbai, was suffering from multiple health issues apart from being infected by novel coronavirus, a senior civic official said.

According to the Union Health ministry's data, 14 people have been discharged and three have died.
