The Maharashtra government is contemplating Covid-induced lockdown in the state due to the huge crowd turnout during the recently concluded festivals.

Speaking to the media on Sunday in Pune the Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said, "There were huge crowds during the Diwali period. Even at the time of Ganesha Chaturthi, we saw crowds. We are speaking to relevant departments. We'll review the situation for next 8-10 days and then a decision will be taken about the lockdown."

Talking further on the issue the deputy CM said, "Now there are predictions that second wave may come. Government has made a lot of regulations to start schools, which includes different ways on how they should be sanitized."

Schools for classes 9 to 12 in the state are reopening tomorrow onwards (November 23) depending upon the Covid-19 situation in local areas. However, BMC has directed all schools in Mumbai to stay closed till December 31, 2020.

The statement by the Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has come at a time when there are speculations of train and flight operations to and from Delhi being suspended due to rising cases of COVID-19 in the national capital.

Maharashtra on Saturday reported 5,760 fresh COVID-19 cases which pushed the count to 17,74,455. While the capital city  Mumbai reported 1,092 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally of infected people to 2,74,572.

Meanwhile, 45,209 fresh COVID-19 cases were recorded across the country on Sunday, November 22. With this, the tally increased to 90,95,807.

According to the Union Health Ministry data, there are currently 4,40,962 active cases across the country, while 85,21,617 patients have been discharged.
