As the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak continues to spread like wildfire across India, government sources said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with floor leaders of various political parties in India through video conferencing on April 8 at 11 AM to discuss ways to amplify the fight against the virus.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with floor leaders of political parties (who have more than five MPs in Parliament) through video conferencing on April 8 at 11 am," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said in a release.

Earlier, Congress had suggested that the central government should hold an all-party meeting to discuss the crisis created by COVID-19.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday chaired a joint meeting of the Empowered Groups constituted for planning and ensuring implementation of COVID-19 response activities in the country.

In the meeting, Prime Minister Modi reviewed countrywide preparedness regarding the availability of hospitals, proper isolation, and quarantine facilities as well as disease surveillance, testing, and critical care training.

He also directed officials to ensure sufficient production, procurement, and availability of all essential medical equipment such as PPEs, masks, gloves, and ventilators.

Out of the Empowered Groups, nine are headed by Secretary level officers, one by a member of NITI Aayog, one by CEO of NITI Aayog.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for a nine-minute blackout plea at 9 pm on April 5 to light diyas or candles in the home to show solidarity and confidence in our collective fight against COVID19.

In light of the heightened concern on the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in India, the country has been placed under complete lockdown for 21 days. Authorities have asked citizens to maintain strict social distancing to cut the spread of the virus outbreak.

As of 10:30 PM on Saturday, more than 3,000 people across India have been reported to have contracted the COVID-19 disease, as new cases were reported in states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu on this day. The virus has affected over 11 lakh people worldwide. The global death toll has crossed reached 62,000, according to the COVID-19 statistics center at the John Hopkins University.
