Coronavirus news: India reports 93,337 new cases, tally crosses 53 lakh

The total case tally stands at 53,08,015 including 10,13,964 active cases, 42,08,432 recovered and 85,619 deaths.

With 93,337 fresh cases and 1,247 deaths in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 case count crossed 53-lakh mark on Saturday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total case tally stands at 53,08,015 including 10,13,964 active cases, 42,08,432 cured/discharged/migrated and 85,619 deaths, as per the Ministry.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the cumulative total samples tested up to September 18 are 6,24,54,254. The number of samples tested on September 18 is 8,81,911.

As far as the active cases are concerned in the states, as per the Health Ministry, Maharashtra has 301273 active cases, Karnataka 101148, Andhra Pradesh 84423, Uttar Pradesh 67825 and Tamil Nadu 46506.

On Friday, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said that nearly 30 COVID-19 candidates are in pre-clinical and clinical stages, developed by the pharmaceutical industry and academia in India.

Vardhan informed the House that the government has extended its support for the development of vaccine-associated research resources, the establishment of clinical trial sites, and notifying enabling regulatory guidelines.

He also informed that the distribution of COVID-19 vaccine, when available, would be done as per the protocols under the Universal Immunization Program (UIP).

"A high-level expert group is looking into matters related to vaccine distribution and immunisation. The distribution and immunisation of the Coronavirus vaccine are subject to availability. Once available, the Coronavirus vaccine distribution follows the same route as for the current practice of vaccines distribution," Vardhan apprised the Lok Sabha on Friday through a written reply.
