For informing local authorities about two villagers who had recently returned from Maharastra after potentially being infected with the coronavirus, a youth named Bablu Kumar Mahto in Bihar was beaten to death on March 29.

The act took place in Bihar's Sitamarhi district after officials announced that two immigrant workers from Madhaul village under Runni Saidpur block of Sitamarhi district had returned to the village on March 20 from Mumbai amid COVID-19 lockdown across India.

With 223 cases, Maharashtra is the most affected state in the country, followed by Kerala with 221.

20-year-old Bablu was previously quoted as saying by the local media that they could be infected with the virus.

Local authorities and a team of doctors came to the village on March 24 to examine the two suspected villagers and their family members.

“They caught Bablu Kumar while he was alone on March 29 and beat him up badly. He was severely injured and was taken to Runni Saidpur primary health centre from where the doctors referred him to another hospital Shrikrishna Medical College and Hospital in neighbouring Muzaffarpur district. But, he succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital,” Bablu's brother Guddu Mahto was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

Right after this, Bablu's father, Vinod Kumar Mahto, filed an official FIR at the local police station against Munna Kumar Mahto, Sudhir Kumar Mahto and few others.

Police so far arrested the two accused, Sudhir Mahato and Munna Mahato, in relation to the case.

The Bihar government had earlier appealed to villagers to instantly inform the local administration and the medical help centres about people entering/returning from other States to avoid COVID-19 outspread.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has imposed a 21-day lockdown till April 14 to combat the spread of novel coronavirus.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), there are 1251 confirmed cases of coronavirus cases in the country and 32 fatalities have been reported.
