Coronavirus: 6 people from Telangana who attended Nizamuddin congregation die, Kejriwal orders FIR against organiser

Six people from Telangana who attended a religious congregation in Delhi's Nizamuddin died due to the novel coronavirus, the state government said on Monday as the religious establishment in the national capital emerged as a major hotspot. 

"Coronavirus has spread among some of those who attended a religious prayer meeting from March 13 to 15 at Markaz in Nizamuddin area in Delhi," the state government said in a press release. 

 

"Among those who attended were some persons from Telangana," it said. 

Two of the six died at the Gandhi Hospital, one each in two private hospitals, and one each in Nizamabad and Gadwal towns, the statement said. 

The statement did not mention the time of their deaths.

People were being taken to hospitals in buses even on Tuesday morning. 

Officials said over 2,000 delegates, including from Indonesia and Malaysia, attended the Tabligh-e-Jamaat congregation at Nizamuddin Markaz from March 1-15. 

The area near the establishment was virtually sealed following fears that some people may have contracted COVID-19. The Delhi government will launch a house-to-house mapping exercise in two nearby colonies on Tuesday to check for coronavirus cases.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has ordered the registration of an FIR against a maulana for leading the congregation. 

While various state government have asked local authorities to identify those who attended the congregation, Telangana has asked such people to come forward. 

The Telangana government said will conduct tests and offer treatment to them free of cost. The government also requested the people to alert if they come to know about those who participated in the prayers.

Special teams under the collectors have identified the persons who came in contact with the deceased and they are shifted to the hospitals, it said.

"They were tested and treated. Since those participated in Markaz prayers were inflicted with corona, all those participated in the prayers should inform the officials concerned. The government would conduct tests and offer treatment to them free of cost. Hence, all those, who went for the Markaz prayers in Delhi should inform the authorities. Any one who has information about them should alert the government," the Medical and Health Department of Telangana State stated in a statement.
