In a sinister twist to the story of abduction and forced conversion of a Sikh teenager in Pakistan, it has emerged that the man she was allegedly forced to marry is a terror operative and part of Hafiz Saeed's Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD). JuD is believed to be the front for the Islamist terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba, responsible for the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

On Thursday, Jagjit Kaur — who was missing for three days — surfaced as Ayesha, after being forced to convert and marry a local man. Jagjit's father, Bhagwan Singh, is a 'granthi' (priest) at Gurudwara Tambu Sahib in Nankana Sahib, Lahore.

"Our family has faced a tragic incident as some goons forcibly entered our house and abducted my younger sister. They tortured her and forcibly converted her to Islam," said Surinder Singh. "We went to a police station to register a complaint and met many senior officials, but they have not listened to our complaint. The goons again came to our house and forced us to withdraw our complaint and threatened that they will also force us to convert to Islam if we persisted with the complaint." Manmohan Singh, Jagjit's other brother, said, "The goons also threatened that if we do not withdraw the complaint, we will be killed. I have appealed to Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief of Army Staff Qamar Javed Bajwa to help us or else the incident could impact the Kartarpur Corridor."

The family has also appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa for Jagjit's safe return. Several members of the Sikh community gathered at Gurudwara Nankana Sahib to demand her release. The family also threatened to self immolate themselves in front of the Punjab Governor's house if Jagjit was not returned safely.

After massive outrage, Chief Minister of Pakistan's Punjab Province ordered a high-level probe, and three provincial ministers have been made part of the committee that will ascertain facts of the case.

A video if Jagjit's wedding ceremony has also gone viral on social media. Pictures have also emerged of her purported statement before a magistrate, saying she was not forced to marry or convert.

The incident has caused an uproar within the Sikh diaspora across the world, and among in India. Amrinder Singh, Chief Minister of Punjab called upon Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar to take action.

The Akali Dal, a BJP ally in the central government, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and S Jaishankar to take the matter up at the highest level. "The Ministry has received a number of representations from various quarters of civil society in India, including Sikh religious bodies," said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "We have shared these concerns with the government of Pakistan and asked for immediate remedial action."
