The incident took place yesterday morning outside a five-star hotel near Gateway of India in south Mumbai, police said today.

Constable Laxman Raut (29) was checking his Glock pistol sitting in a patrolling vehicle when it suddenly went off and the bullet hit his hand.

He was taken to a government-run hospital for treatment.

The gunshot led to a momentary panic in the area.
