Pushing chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s government into a minority technically, former Congress MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy showed his strength by staging a hunger protest with 24 Congress MLAs by his side.

The 48-hour programme was aimed at highlighting the problems of farmers in the state.

The Congress currently has 156 MLAs in the House of 294. It has to maintain the magic figure of 148 to remain in power. With 24 of 156 MLAs attending the programme launched by Jagan, the political equation is fast changing.

“There are more Congress MLAs extending support to Jagan. But he is against collapse of the [Kiran Reddy] government. There is no plan to poach sitting MLAs and throw Congress out of power,” K Surekha, a sitting Congress MLA and Jagan loyalist, said.

Meanwhile, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, who is on an indefinite fast demanding better compensation for flood-affected farmers, continued his protest on the fifth day.

Three ministers led by health minister DL Ravindra Reddy met Naidu in hospital to convince him to end his fast.

The doctors treating him said the condition of the TDP chief was fast deteriorating. “He is stable now. But there are chances of more complications  if he continues to starve,” PV Prasad, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences director, said.

Meanwhile, the government approached a lower court through the police department seeking an order to provide medical support to Naidu, and the court obliged.
