The Congress, in a bid to reclaim its most prominent Gandhi, held the meeting of the party’s Working Committee at Wardha after paying respects to the Father of the Nation at Bapu’s Sevagram Ashram. Party president Rahul Gandhi said that Bapu is a set of ideas and while the BJP may try to appropriate him, their actions prove otherwise.

Speaking on the occasion, Rahul said that Mahatma Gandhi showed an entire nation the way to prevail over the superpowers of the world through the simple way of non-violence. “Gandhiji showed the way to an entire country.

When there was violence all over the world, during the Second World War, during the time of Hitler, a man in India said we will overcome the superpowers of the world, with love. In his entire life, Gandhiji neither hated anyone, nor was he violent towards anyone,” said Gandhi.

He said that PM Modi has insulted the Mahatma by talking of taking up his ideals. “On August 15, the Prime Minister in his address to the country said that before he took over, this country was sleeping. This is an insult to the people of the country and to Gandhiji. He may go and fold his hands in front of Gandhiji’s statue, but Modiji fights against the ideals of truthfulness and non-violence that he espoused,” said Gandhi.

He also took to Twitter to launch a veiled attack on the Modi dispensation. “Gandhiji is not an immobile statue, he is a living set of ideas and values flowing through India. Truth and non-violence, which he lived for and was killed for, are the foundations of our country. True patriots must protect them,” he said.
