As Congress put up a dismal show in the recently held Tamil Nadu civic polls, Union Home Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram Saturday expressed concern over the "difficult situation" of his party in the state."It is happy to note that 749 congressmen had been elected to the civic bodies but at the same time it causes concern over the difficult situation we are facing," he said in a statement. He said 61 congressmen were elected from the areas coming under Sivaganga Lok Sabha constituency, represented by him.Besides the 749 congressmen, another 109 congressmen had won as village panchayat presidents, for which elections were held on non-party basis, he said."The party will have a bright future if the Congressmen with the help of elected representatives implemented the party's programmes sincerely," he added.Congress was pushed to the fifth position, managing to secure only five per cent of the total votes polled during the two-phase polls held on October 17 and 19.
