Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday criticised Congress leaders for making irresponsible and absurd allegations about Narendra Modi’s anointment as the party’s prime ministerial candidate. He claimed the Congress is afraid to compete with the BJP and Modi’s developmental agenda for the nation.
“Congress is rattled and they are making irresponsible, and at times, idiotic statements. One leader says it will be the end of democracy if Modi wins. The party which has murdered democracy, which has put millions of people into jail, and which was responsible for the loss of freedom in the country, is making such absurd allegations,” he told media here.
“They are afraid that they will not be able to face Narendra Modi and his developmental agenda. They want to run away from the debate about developmental agenda, they want to divert the attention of the people from the issue of governance and development, and they want to bring communal politics,” he added.
Naidu assured the people that the NDA’s record of good governance and its development agenda would be placed before them, and they could then compare this with the UPA’s miserable failures. Cutting across party lines, politicians have already described Modi as a divisive element with no unanimity about him within his own party. Earlier in the day, BJP President Rajnath Singh said there is no rift between veteran LK Advani and the party.
Advani publicly praised Modi at a rally in Chhattisgarh for the first on his elevation, said that the latter has done a lot for the development in Gujarat. “Gujarat has improved a lot in infrastructure and electricity. I give this example because Narendra Modi, who my party has appointed as 2014 PM candidate, has done a lot for development in Gujarat state," he said. This was Advani’s first public appearance since he objected to the BJP's decision to declare Modi as its choice for prime minister on Friday. Advani had also written a letter to BJP president Rajnath Singh to express his disappointment over the latter's style of functioning.
