Attacking chief election commissioner N Gopalaswami, the Congress on Sunday opposed the demand for EC Navin Chawla's resignation despite the CEC recommending his removal.

"There is remarkable congruence of views between that of the BJP and what it wants and some actions of the Election Commission," Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said, apparently seeking to turn the tables on BJP which had accused Chawla of bias towards Congress.

On the demand for Chawla's sacking, he said, "the institution of Election Commission is far bigger than individuals. Everybody will be continuing or retiring as the law mandates."

The recommendation by Gopalaswami for Chawla's removal came about three months before he is to demit office on April 20 and is based on a petition by the BJP, which had complained against the "partisan" functioning of Chawla.

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Saturday said that Chawla had acted "most impartially".
