In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, HRD Minister Smriti Irani said JNU had earlier been allowing 10 per cent relaxation in qualifying marks in the entrance test or the second stage to OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates.

Taking into account the decisions of the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court, the varsity's Standing Committee on Admissions has recommended 10 per cent relaxation to OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates in the qualifying marks at the initial stage in comparison to general category candidates, she said.

"The university has decided to place the matter before its Academic Council for consideration," Irani said.
