A total of 749 new cases of coronavirus were reported in Bihar on Wednesday, taking the tally to 13,274, the state health department said.
Patna district magistrate Kumar Ravi announced a complete lockdown in the state capital from July 10 to July 16 after a spurt of cases were seen in various parts of the city.
Patna has seen a huge spike in coronavirus cases over the past few weeks. Late last month, a wedding in Patna district had emerged as a super-spreader, infecting more than 130 people.
The huge spike in cases was acknowledged by the collector who said there is an alarming surge in coronavirus cases in Patna in the past three weeks and positivity rate has also been considerably high.
The district administration is convinced that the requirement for a lockdown is inevitable and urgent to contain the further spread of the virus within the district, an order issued by the district administration said.
All government offices and public corporations will remain closed, the order said. However, office related to defence, central armed police forces, treasury, public utilities, disaster management, power generation and transmission units, post offices, National Information Centre will be open.
The total number of coronavirus cases in Bihar reached 13,274, including 9,338 recovered cases.
India has reported a spike of 22,752 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country`s coronavirus tally to 7,42,417 on Wednesday, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
