A Mahila Court in Coimbatore sentenced a 30-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping and murdering a minor girl in the city in 2011.

Judge MP Subramanian sentenced Govindan under sections 302(murder) of IPC and 201 (attempting to destroy evidence) and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. The Judge also sentenced him 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment for kidnap under IPC 366 and seven years for rape under 376. The sentences will run concurrently, he ordered.

Incidentally, Govindan is already serving a life sentence in the the Central prison here as he was convicted in the rape and murder of a 21-year old college student in Uthangarai in Krishnagiri in January 2011.

The prosecution case was that Govindan had raped and murdered the eight-year-old girl, a relative of him, on February 28, 2011 and burnt the body in an open ground near her house in Udayampalayam. Govindan who had surrendered a couple of days after the rape of the minor girl, confessed to rape and murder of the college girl for which a Krishnagiri Court sentenced him to life imprisonment.
