Congress MP Naveen Jindal is in a spot. The CBI on Wednesday sent him a communique asking him to return to the country from London and help the agency in its investigations into the coal block allocation scam.
The CBI filed an FIR against Jindal and Dasari Narayan Rao, former minister of state for coal, on Tuesday accusing them of criminal misconduct, conspiracy, and cheating.
The FIR, the 12th in the case, named Jindal Steel and Power Ltd and three other companies — Gagan Sponge Iron Pvt Ltd, Jindal Reality, and New Delhi Exim Pvt Ltd — in which Jindal holds substantial shares, accusing them of influencing the screening committee during the allocation.
Rao and his company, Sowbhagya Media, allegedly favoured the Jindal group during the allocation of the Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block in Jharkhand in 2008. In December 2008, Jindal’s New Delhi Exim bought about 2.5 lakh shares in Sowbhagya Media at almost four times the market price.
A source said the CBI has asked Jindal to open the locks of his offices in Delhi.
The investigation received a fillip on Wednesday with the Centre allowing the CBI to question former coal secretary HC Gupta. Initially, the government refused permission without giving any reason. But now the agency can question him because Gupta, a member of the Competition Commission of India, resigned on Wednesday.
