Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi should make efforts to effect a 'real ceasefire' in Sri Lanka, so that the lives of innocent Tamils can be saved,All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK) president, Sharathkumar said on Tuesday.

Replying to a specific question on the remarks by Sri Lanka president Mahinda Rajapakse that LTTE was using Tamil civilians as 'human shields', Sharathkumar told reporters at the city airport that whatever may be the case a 'real ceasefire' should be declared to protect Tamils from elimination.

Besides, a person from Tamil Nadu should be appointed to monitor the implementation of ceasefire and then only it would yield proper results, he said.

On coming Lok Sabha polls, Sarathkumar said the issue of foging alliance was being discussed with party office bearers.

Alleging that money power had won in the Thirumangalam by election, he said Election Commission could have prevented it, if it had taken necessary steps at the initial stage itself.
