Christmas was celebrated with traditional gaiety on Wednesday in Aligarh in the wake of plans by a Hindu outfit to hold mass conversions.

Though the Dharam Jagran Samiti had called off its planned programme for mass conversion of Christians here, the district authorities as a precautionary step on Wednesday issued preventive notices to more than 500 activists of the outfit and some other saffron organisations.

DIG Aligarh zone Amit Agarwal that the notices under section 107 /116 of the CRPC have issued to individuals from whom there is threat perception regarding law and order. It will remain in force for the next six months, Agarwal said. Those served notice include the district convener of the Samiti, Satya Prakash Navman.
