Days after a man and his family — to resolve a dispute — traded in his wife for 71 sheep in the Belipar area of Gorakhpur, a case has been registered against them. Shockingly though, the case against the family is for theft of sheep!
On July 22, Umesh, 22, a resident of Pipraich village had eloped with a woman. According to the police, five days ago, Rajesh, the woman's husband, and Umesh had a public dispute over her, where she chose to be with the latter.
To resolve it, the matter was taken to the village panchayat. The panchayat, in its verdict, asked Umesh and his family to hand over half of the sheep they owned to the woman's in-laws, which both the families agreed to. Umesh's family owned 140 sheep and agreed to give 71 to the woman's family.

However, on Friday, Umesh's father approached the Khorabar police and filed a complaint demanding his flock of sheep be returned to him. Furthermore, he accused the woman's husband of stealing his sheep. The Khorabar police then transferred the case to the Pipraich police station.
Meanwhile, even as the police was investigating the case, the woman refused to return to her husband, and reiterated her choice to live with Umesh.
Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Sunil Gupta said that Rajesh has been arrested in the theft case against him and his family and they have been asked to return the sheep.
