The Centre on Monday said it will develop a stretch of 4 kilometres that connects the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor from Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab's Gurdaspur district to the Pakistan border.

The Centre gave the information in reply to a question asked by Congress MP from Amritsar Gurjeet Singh Aujla on the Kartarpur Corridor during the ongoing Winter Session.

"The government of India has decided to develop the corridor from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district up to the International Border with Pakistan. The approximate length of the road project is about 4 km," Minister of State for Highways Mansukh L Mandaviya said in a written reply.

During Question Hour, Aujla directed his query, a supplementary question, at the National Highway Authority. "The Central government has decided to open the Dera Baba Nanak – Kartarpur Sahib corridor for Sikh pilgrims. What infrastructure is being made available for this purpose? I would also like to know from the National Highway Authority regarding the proposed planning in this matter," Aujla had asked.

He further said that the holy site — where Guru Nanak Dev had spent 18 years — is the reason why over 1,25,000 pilgrims visit Darbar Sahib. "The same number of pilgrims is expected to visit Shri Kartarpur Sahib to pay their obeisance. So, the State Highway No.25 should be converted into a National Highway and it should be made signal free for pilgrims (sic)," Aujla said amid interruptions.

In November, India and Pakistan had agreed to construct the corridor in Kartarpur on either sides so that Sikh devotees could worship at Gurdwara Nankana Sahib during the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. While in India, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh laid the foundation stone for the corridor on November 26, in Pakistan, prime minister Imran Khan laid it in Pakistan on November 28. The corridor will facilitate visa-free movement of Indian Sikh pilgrims.
