Considering the rapid urbanisation in the country with more yet to come, the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (Cept) University has taken an initiative to make the approach to urban development a holistic process. The Cept University has established a centre called Centre for Urban Equity (CUE) for the purpose.

The centre which is funded by the ministry of housing and urban poverty alleviation (MHUPA) was inaugurated on Monday. Alongside, CUE also organised a panel discussion on ‘Vision of Inclusive Ahmedabad’.

Member secretary of the centre and faculty of planning and public policy at Cept Darshini Mahadevia said, “Urbanisation is going to be the future of the country. Urban systems will have to respond simultaneously to both agenda of economic growth and agenda of human development. Hence there is a need to expand the scope of urban development agenda to include all dimensions of human wellbeing.” Referring to the role and importance of the new centre, she said, “The CUE is an endeavour that will advocate a human centered urban development paradigm based on the notion of equity. Such an approach to urbanisation is extremely important in a rapidly transforming country like ours which has large number of internal inequalities emanating from history, culture and society super imposed on capital-driven economic growth model.”

The centre will avail student research fellowships, doctoral fellowships and also introduce electives for the existing students. The centre will not only sensitise its students but also government officials, policy makers and the public through orientation programme, news letters, publications and so on. It will also conduct training and capacity building of governmental and non-governmental staff.

The areas of research education and training that the centre will focus on include urban planning practices, land tenure for the slums, Housing upgradation for the slums, livelihood and skills of the urban poor, health and education.
