Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat has decided to contribute Rs 50,000 every month to the PM-Cares relief fund for one year, officials informed on Sunday.

He has already been contributing since April and will continue it till March next year, they added.

"The monthly contribution is 20 per cent of his total salary. In total, he will donate Rs 6 lakh to the PM-CARES fund," a military official was quoted by PTI as saying.

The PM Cares was set up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March as a relief fund to deal with the coronavirus pandemic that has claimed nearly 4,000 lives across the country.

Several personalities including political leaders, corporates, and Bollywood celebrities have donated significant amounts to the fund.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh gave his go ahead to a proposal eaarlier this month to allow a voluntary monthly contribution of one day's salary for next 11 months to the PM CARES fund the armed forces and all other employees of the Defence Ministry.
