Confusion reigned around no0n on Saturday as the CBSE's website crashed minutes before the Class 10 results were to be announced. Parents and students were panic-stricken before the website came back half an hour later.

The results, when they came out, were a rude shock for India's students. The overall pass percentage was recorded at 90.95 per cent, 5.26 per cent lower than last year's 96.21 per cent.

For students of the national capital it was even worse. Delhi recorded a pass percentage of 78.09 per cent against last year's 91.06 per cent, a fall of 13.67 per cent. This made Delhi ninth out of the ten regions.

CBSE divides the country into 10 regions and only Guwahati came below Delhi. Trivandrum recorded the best pass percentage at 99.85 while Chennai and Allahabad stood second and third with a total percentage of 99.62 and 98.23 respectively.

Some principals have attributed the big dip in the Capital's pass percentage to private students. These are students who opted for open learning classes. "The pass percentage of both the board-based (evaluated by the CBSE) and home-based (students whose exams were evaluated in their schools) in Delhi is approximately 94 per cent. How can then the total pass percentage be 78.09? It clearly shows that a large number of private students have not passed the exam," said Ashok Pandey, Principal, Ahlcon International School.

Meanwhile, bucking the trend, boys outperformed girls this year with 0.9 percentage. The results show that 93.4 per cent boys passed opposed to 92.5 per cent girls, a surprise result, given that girls normally have outshone boys when it has come to the Class 10 results. A total of 1,05,188 male students secured 10 CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) in compassion to the 1,00,950 female students.

In terms of institution wise pass percentage, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) outshone others with 99.67 per cent followed by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and independent schools with 99.66 and 97.43 per cent respectively.

The pass percentage in Class 10 at the national level has been gradually slipping over the years. However, in an encouraging trend, students in the specially-abled category — 3,803 out of 4,254 students who sat for the exams — had passed. "The pass percentage of students in the specially abled category was recorded at 89.4 per cent which was better than in previous years," board officials said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Twitter congratulated the students on Twitter after the results came out, "Congratulations to my young friends who have successfully passed the CBSE Class X exams. Good luck for the journey ahead."
