The Supreme Court on Monday asked Karnataka to appraise it by Tuesday afternoon whether it has released water to Tamil Nadu or not.

The court has given Karnataka a deadline till Tuesday 2:00 pm.

The Supreme Court, on September 30, had asked Karnataka to discharge 6,000 cusecs of water from October 1 to 6, while warning that 'no one would know when the 'wrath of the law' would fall on it'.

It had also ordered all the stakeholders in the dispute -- Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry -- to give the names of their representatives to be included in the board which would be headed by Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti.

However, the Centre also sought the modification of Supreme Court order to set up Cauvery Water Management Board.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said the state was the "victim" and not the villain in the Cauvery river water dispute as it was being portrayed by some people.

Even though the water in the four Cauvery reservoirs in the state was "inadequate", the state government's first priority was to meet the drinking water requirements of the people of the Cauvery basin, the chief minister said, adding that the state needed to conserve water till 2017.
