In a suspected case of honour-killing, a 22-year-old Dalit graduate was on Sunday allegedly hacked to death by three men on a motorbike in Tamil Nadu
The incident that took place at a busy junction in Udumalaipettai town of Tirupur district was captured on a CCTV camera.
The deceased Sankar, who was pursuing his third year of engineering had married to 19-year-old Gowsalya, from the dominant Thevar community. The girl's parents were allegedly unhappy with the marriage.
In a video footage with the News Minute, attackers are seen dragging the man onto a pavement and beating him with weapons till he stopped moving.
Gowsalya was also attacked and is admitted to a local hospital with multiple injuries. She is out of danger.
"We thought her parents would accept them but it has ended in this bloody tragedy. We've lost him", reported NDTV quoting father Velu Samy.
“We are pallars, also known as devendra kula vellalars. The girl is from a higher caste. The girl’s family was unhappy initially with the wedding, and they even came and threatened her 15 days ago, but the girl did not go back,” said Sankar's cousin Ganeshan, speaking to the news channel.
He added, “We suspect that they were hacked due to the inter-caste marriage."
The police are still investigating the case and have formed a special team to nab the suspects.
