This stunning statistic is thanks to the fact that the Capital has seen a record number of crimes. In fact in May this year, senior officials say that the number of thefts reached an all time high of 469 a day in this month. They also add however that they arrested over 6,560 culprits this year which worked out to 43 a day.

But despite the growing number of arrests, Delhi police officials are gradually seeing a growing number of burglaries over the years which  ironically is also seeing an increased conviction rate.  In this year till May 31, 70,854 thefts were reported out of which 10,792 were solved which accounted for 15.23%.

Contrast this to 2016 which witnessed 1.3 lakh thefts in the entire year. The statistics show that the conviction rate was 13.35% while in 2015 it was 10.72% with total number of thefts at 1.04 lakh.

Delhi police officers claim that the rise in conviction rate — especially on thefts — is thanks to some of their newly initiated schemes like the neighbourhood watch scheme Prehari, the eyes and years scheme and the Police Mitra scene.
