As Saurashtra University has not followed the guidelines of the University Grants Commission’s reservation policy, the National Commission of Schedule Castes (NCSC) has directed the varsity to cancel admissions it gave to Bachelor of Education (BEd) courses for the academic year 2011-12.

“During the admission process, central admission committee has not followed the rules and guidelines of the UGC and reservation policy of central and state governments. Therefore, the commission has ordered the cancellation of the entire process,” Dr Sunil Jadhav, member of the NCSC, said.

The Central Admission Committee for BEd has allotted admissions in the SC/ST category prior to the release of the general merit list. Due to this, SC/ST students could not take benefit of the general category merit list and could not get admission in their college of choice.

“It is mandatory for universities to first give admissions to general category as per guidelines, so that the SC/ST category students with better merit can also get a chance in the non-reserved category,” Dr Jadhav added.

The occurrence came to light when students of the reserved category complained about it to a local political leader. The latter brought this to the notice of the commission and, following enquiry by the commission, the Central Admission Committee of Saurashtra University accepted the fact and assured the CAC that it will abide by the guidelines and directives of the NCSC.
