C'wealth Games scam: Kalmadi's aide moves high court challenging order

Former C'Wealth Games organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi's close aide Shekhar Deorukhkar, arrested for his alleged role in a corruption case relating to the sporting event, today moved Delhi high court against the trial court's order dismissing his bail plea.

Justice Ajit Bharihoke issued a notice to the CBI and sought its reply by April 20 on the bail plea filed by Deorukhkar claiming that the probe agency has failed to recover any incriminating documents from his possession.

Deorukhkar also claimed his name did not figure in the FIR and that there was no direct evidence against him.

He was arrested from Pune on February 11 in the C'Wealth Games overlays scam in which nearly Rs600 crore worth of contracts relating to the Games's overlays project are under the scanner of various probe agencies.

Opposing the bail plea before the trial court, which rejected his bail plea earlier this month, the CBI had said there are sufficient material on record which confirms that he had obtained a huge bribe amount from the overlays suppliers.

CBI had also said that the accused could tamper with evidence and could influence the witnesses, if he is released on bail.

The CBI arrested Kalmadi's personal assistant after registering a fresh case in award of contracts for overlays at different venues for the Games at alleged exorbitant rates.

The CBI had earlier arrested three senior C'Wealth Games organising committee officials - T S Darbari, Sanjay Mahindroo and M Jayachandran. All the three were subsequently granted bail. Beenu Nanu, the head of two event management companies, was the fourth person to be picked up.

Overlays works included supply of tents, marquees, pre-fabricated units, portable toilets, containers, security fences, furniture, public display LED boards, floor finishes, material handling equipment, gensets, cabling, UPS, air-conditioners, lighting, civil construction, athletic exercise equipment and grandstands.
