The wait to see Humboldt penguins at the Ranibag Zoo in Byculla is over as the civic body plans a public viewing on March 17.

Safety arrangements have been made for the seven penguins out of the eight that were brought to the city in 2016.

According to sources, the zoo has made all preparations for public viewing and the civic body has planned to open it on March 17. Visitors will not require to pay any extra charge till March 31 to see penguins apart from entry charge at the Ranibag Zoo.

A proposal is under consideration to charge visitors after March 31. According to officials involved with the development, a proposal regarding charges will be sent to the group leaders for approval. “There is planning to charge Rs 100 for adult and Rs 50 for child visitors,” said an official, adding that Rs 100 will be charged at two stages. 

“Every visitor will have to pay Rs 50 at the entry of Ranibag Zoo and thereafter Rs 50 for viewing Humboldt Penguins,” said the official. Similarly, child visitors will be charged half of adult. At present, visitors have to pay Rs 5 for entry at Ranibag Zoo in Byculla.

The civic body is expecting that around 6000 to 7000 visitors during weekend. Renovation at the Ranibag Zoo is already underway and even a tender has also been floated for procuring all kind of animals including lion for the zoo.
