KOLKATA: A mini bus racing down a bridge in Howrah near here spun out of control and careened off the railing to fall several feet down on a building, killing one person and injuring 15 on Saturday morning.

Police said a woman was killed in the accident, which occurred around 8.30 a.m. The bus fell on the roof of a girls' college - Bijoykrishna College.

At least 15 people, including eight occupants of the bus, were injured. Six of them are in critical condition. They were admitted to the Howrah General Hospital.

The bus of the Howrah-Baishnabghata route fell from Bankim Setu, a bridge that connects Kolkata's twin city Howrah to the Howrah Bridge over the Hooghly river. One arm of the bridge also connects to the Howrah railway station.

The bridge, a vital link between Kolkata and Howrah, is in a bad shape and for years it has seen almost no repair work.
