A British tourist jumped off the balcony of her room in a hotel in Agra on Tuesday morning allegedly to save herself from the hotel owner who tried to molest her.
The 31-year-old dentist told the police that she was the only occupant of room 204 on the second-floor of Agra Mahal Hotel in the Idgah area. She claimed that she was up early to set off for Jaipur when the owner, Sachin Chauhan, knocked on her door around 4am, entered her room and tried to molest her. She then leapt off the balcony and landed on the lobby.
Although the jump left her with several injuries to a leg, she managed to flag down an auto and, with the help of the driver, lodged an FIR with the tourism police against Chauhan.
Agra senior superintendent of police Subhash Dubey told reporters that Chauhan was arrested soon after and that this isn’t the first time a complaint of misbehaviour with a tourist was filed against him.
The hotel owner rubbished the tourist’s allegation. Chauhan told the police that she had asked to be woken up early to leave for Jaipur and when she didn’t respond to his calls, he decided to walk into her room to wake her up.
The incident comes on the heels of a gang rape of a Swiss national in Datia in MP.
Taking serious note of the incident, tourism minister K Chiranjeevi on Tuesday ordered suspension of the three-star rating of the hotel. The tourism ministry also issued a show cause notice to the hotel asking it why its licence should not be cancelled.
