North Sikkim: 16 Army personnel killed in road accident, here's what happened

The Indian Army launched a rescue mission immediately.

Sixteen Army personnel have been killed in a road accident in North Sikkim's Zema district. Four personnel have sustained injuries. 

According to reports, the accident took place when the vehicle they were travelling in skidded down a steep slope. The accident happened when they were negotiating a sharp turn, said the Indian Army in a statement. 

The Army further said the vehicle was part of a 3-vehicle convoy that had been going to Chatten towards Thangu. The journey began in the morning.

"Enroute at Zema, the truck skidded down a steep slope while negotiating a sharp turn," it said. 

The Indian Army launched a rescue mission immediately.

4 injured soldiers were evacuated and airlifted to hospitals.

Those killed include three JCOs.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted his condolences to the bereaved families.

"The nation is deeply grateful for their service and commitment. My condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of those who are injured," he tweeted.

"Unfortunately, three Junior Commissioned Officers and 13 soldiers succumbed to the injuries sustained in the accident. Indian Army stands firm with the bereaved families, at this hour of loss," the Army said in a statement, reports PTI.
