The telling of the Christmas story has been an important part of Christmas. And one way it is kept fresh in the minds of people is through the crib, a model of the manger that Jesus was born in.

A nativity scene is a depiction of the birth of Jesus as described in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. St. Francis of Assisi is credited with creating the first nativity scene in 1223 at Greccio, Italy.

Soon, every church and house started to make a crib during Christmas. Talking about the importance of it, Fr. Aubrey Fernandes says, “Every family is encouraged to make a crib as it helps you remember what happened 2000 years back plus it a very good way to pass the message to children.” He explains how a crib is divided into three sections: the stable/manger, the shepherds and angels and the three kings. The stable stands for how God chose to be born as a simple human being rather then a king, the angels and shepherds shows how the good news was announced to the simple people while the three wise kings signify the pagan world knowing that the king is born.

There is also a legend of the drummer boy, who goes along with the shepherds to see the king but as he has no gifts he plays his drum and sings a song ‘pa rum pa’. And as he sings baby Jesus opens his eyes and smiles.

DNA spoke to people who explained what the crib stands for them. Richard Mascarenhas says, “The stable in Bethlehem comes alive! Simply gazing at a crib is sometimes a great experience as one can lose oneself in imagining the joy, peace, warmth and jubilation in that poor manger at the birth of a child who would be the saviour of the world. If God could be born in that manger, why not in me!”

“I make a crib every Christmas. I love the crib as it reminds me of how God loved the world so much that he came here as a man to bring us joy, peace and salvation,” says Francis Atonappa.
