Bombay High Court allows BMC to cut mangroves at 4 locations
An earlier court order imposes condition that prior permission from the court needs to be taken.
The Bombay High Court on Tuesday allowed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to cut mangroves at four location to enable them carry on with infrastructure projects.
A division bench of Justice VM Kanade and Justice PR Bora allowed cutting and replanting of mangroves to lay down a sewer line at Vikhroli, widening and reconstruction of Dharavi bridge, near the drive-in theatre and, to allow construction of vehicular bridge at junction of Yari road and Lokhandwala back road.
Counsel Anil Sakhare and Advocate Trupti Puranik appearing for the civic body argued that the projects are likely to commence and it is important to remove the mangroves located on the plot of lands to ensure smooth laying of the projects undertaken by the civic body. It was also argued that proper permissions have been taken by the corporation from all the concerned authorities.
The corporation had to approach the court seeking permission based on an earlier court order, which imposes condition that prior permission from the court needs to be taken.
