Final updates:

TMC's Asit Kumar Mal is leading against Ram Prasad Das by 99646 votes at 9 PM.

Bolpur Lok Sabha constituency profile:

Bolpur has a special place in the heart of Bengalis as Rabindranath Tagore established Shantiniketan here. While it put Bolpur on a global map, politically the citizens have been lucky to get stalwarts like Somnath Chatterjee representing them in Lok Sabha. It has been a Left citadel with CPI(M) winning constantly from 1971 to 2009. The streak was broken in 2014, when Anupam Hazra of TMC won the seat defeating Left veteran Ram Chandra Dome by 2.36 lakh votes.

This time thoughTMC has opted for Asit Kumar Mal, who was a 5-time Congress MLA. Asit contested 2016 assembly election unsuccessfully but that hasn't stopped TMC from giving the ticket to him mainly due to the trust Birbhum TMC district president Anubrata Mondal has on him.

Asit and Dome had faced off in Bolpur in 2009 also when Asit was the TMC-Congress joint candidate. He was trounced by Dome by a margin of over 90 thousand votes. The political situation in Bolpur though is not the same anymore. TMC is the overwhelmingly dominant party and slowly like other parts of the state, BJP is trying to occupy the opposition space. Yet, with 7-times MP Dome in fray, CPI(M) is hopeful of giving a good fight. Dome won from Birbhum constituency six times in a row from 1989 and later moved to Bolpur, when the seat became reserved for SC-candidates. Before that in Bolpur, it was the Somnath Chatterjee show who won seven times in a row from 1985 bypoll to 2004.  Before that Saradish Roy won the seat 4-times for CPI(M).

BJP  candidate from Bolpur is Ram Prasad Das who is a teacher at Vishwa Bharati. Congress candidate is Abhjit Das, who claims to be a folllower of Pranab Mukherjee. Ram Prasad Das hopes that the anti-incumbency against TMC would go in their benefit even in Lok Sabha election. With heavy hitter like PM Modi campaigning for Ram Prasad Das, BJP is hoping that its organisational weakness in the seat would be offset by people's 'anger towards TMC'.

The assembly segments under Bolpur Ketugram, Mangalkot, Ausgram, Bolpur, Nanoor, Labpur and Mayureswar. Election was held on April 29.
