The government and Congress feel that it has turned the tables on the opposition. The BJP is of the view that it has got more ammunition.
The BJP’s national executive meeting on Wednesday followed by the two-day national council meeting besides making the necessary amendment in the constitution to facilitate Nitin Gadkari to go into a second term will focus on what is to be done to keep the pressure on the UPA government.
Apart from harping on the corruption issue that has exposed the UPA government through the 2G spectrum scam with its notional loss of Rs1.76 lakh crore and the Coalgate losses to the exchequer amounting to Rs1.86 crore, the party would also oppose the government on its latest decision of raising the price of diesel by Rs5 and of limiting subsidised LPG cylinders to six per year and of allowing FDI in multi-brand retail.
The party leaders are aware that they do not have the numbers to bring down the government. It is for this reason that the party has coined ‘sansad se sadak’ (from parliament to the streets) to highlight the government’s role in the coal scam, which reaches the door of prime minister Manmohan Singh, who was holding charge of the coal ministry from 2005 to 2009 when the coal blocks were allocated to private companies.
The government and Congress feel that it has turned the tables on the opposition. The BJP is of the view that it has got more ammunition.
At the crucial meetings, the party leaders will be engaged in chalking out a strategy of offensive against the government. The party has organised the Bharat Bandh on September 20, and it has carried out protest processions in all state and district capitals, and a petition was handed over to the officials. This programme lasted from Septe 17 to Sept 24.
The main opposition party plans to fan out across the country and organise protests and campaign against the UPA government’s acts of omission and commission. The party will have to work out a programme of protests that will stretch till the Lok Sabha elections in 2014.
“The UPA government can fall earlier under the weight of its own contradiction,” a senior party leader speaking on condition of anonymity said.
