From being in opposition for 10 years to a party with absolute majority at the Centre, the BJP is gearing up to deal with the new challenges before it. The party is planning to hold a meeting of its office-bearers on June 17, the first after government formation, to deliberate on reorienting itself in its new role and preparing for the upcoming assembly elections, among other issues.

Tuned to government bashing when it was the principal opposition party, the BJP leaders will now have to keep in mind that their responsibilities have changed, a party leader said. At the meeting, which may be chaired by party president Rajnath Singh, the party will discuss the future course of action for the office-bearers.

One of the foremost tasks before the party is evolving the tactical line for assembly polls in Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and "possibly" in Bihar, sources said. The BJP is hoping to cash in on the Modi impact and the mandate of the Lok Sabha polls in the state elections later this year. The broad strategy for the assembly polls in the light of the lessons learnt from the Lok Sabha campaign is expected to be taken up at the meeting though the leadership issue in the states would be finalised only later. A senior BJP leader said the question of whether the party will face the elections with a chief ministerial candidate could vary from state to state.

The leader said there was no let-up in party's functioning though interactions with the media may have decreased. "We have been going on with our party work, meetings and getting feedback from states," said the leader.

Modi has asked the party to ensure proper coordination between it and the government, setting an example himself by having a meeting with general secretaries and then party workers at the BJP headquarters within a week of becoming prime minister. He has conveyed to party leaders that they should take workers along, spend time in constituencies and ensure the party was not ignored, sources said.

While addressing party workers, he stressed that with power came increased responsibility.

With Singh himself in government now as home minister and around 10 other office-bearers moving into Modi's council of ministers, the BJP is all set for an organisational reshuffle. The cabinet expansion would be linked to the organisational shake-up, sources said.

The recent killings of BJP leaders in Uttar Pradesh is causing concern to the party and the issue could come up at the meeting. Spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said on Sunday that the law and order situation in UP is worrying the party and it will not remain silent on it.
