Not satisfied with the world’s largest political party tag, the BJP will begin its membership drive from July 6, the birth anniversary of its founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee, to expand its current base of 11 crore members by 20%.

The membership drive will continue till August 10, with special emphasis in regions where the party is weak such as West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Kashmir, Telangana, Puducherry and some northeastern states.

“Our aim is to increase the members by at least 20%, that is to enrol 2.28 crore new members in the current base of 11 crores. The membership campaign will run from July 6 to August 10. After this, the campaign to create active members (members who take part in party activities) will be held from August 16 to August 31,” said former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who has been made convenor of the membership drive by party president Amit Shah.

Chouhan said the focus would be to enrol more youth and respectable people.

He said the membership drive will be undertaken through the method of missed calls too that was employed during the last membership drive three years ago. Thereafter, party workers would visit booth level members too to verify their authenticity.

Chouhan said during the membership drive much of the focus will be on Bengal and dared West Bengal chief minister to try to stop them.
