Agrawal, who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election against Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli and lost, filed the petition on Friday.

On January 12, four SC Justices held an unprecedented press conference in which they highlighted the manner in which the CJI had "breached institutional integrity". The press conference kicked off a political storm with various Opposition parties coming out in support of the four judges. The same evening, Gandhi held a presser at the party office and said that the concerns raised by the four judges was "extremely important" and they needed to be "looked into carefully."

In his statement, Gandhi had echoed Justice Chelameswar's remark that democracy would not survive in the country unless the Supreme Court was preserved.
