Terming the vote of confidence in the Karnataka Assembly as "farcical", the CPI(M) today said a fresh vote should be taken in the House for the BJP government to prove its majority."The vote of confidence conducted in the Karnataka Assembly was farcical and a gross violation of democratic norms," party general secretary Prakash Karat said in a statement. He demanded that "a proper vote of confidence must be taken in the Assembly in which all MLAs are allowed to participate and the vote recorded.""Without doing so, the Yeddyurappa government cannot be treated as having acquired a vote of confidence," Karat said.

The party Politburo had yesterday quoted the Supreme Court judgment in the Bommai case and said "a government has toprove its majority on the floor of the House to continue in office. Any disqualification of an MLA can occur only after the vote when the party whip has been violated. Further, this cannot apply to independent MLAs.""All this constitutes a brazen constitutional impropriety and cannot be allowed. The Yeddyurappa government cannot remain in office unless it establishes its majority through a division of votes on the floor of the Assembly," the CPI(M) had said.
