The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to connect with the people directly and seek their suggestions to chalk out an inclusive election manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

On Sunday, BJP president Amit Shah and senior party leader Rajnath Singh launched 'Bharat Ke Mann Ki Baat, Modi Ke Saath', a month-long exercise to seek suggestions from 10 crore people across the country on what they want featured in the party's manifesto.

Key points suggested by the public will be included in the party's 'Sankalp Patra' or manifesto for the General Elections scheduled for the summer.

Shah said the exercise is aimed at democratising the process of preparing manifesto and help the party realise the dream of a 'New India'.

"What kind of country the people want and what are their suggestions to achieve this — this exercise will reach out to them to seek their views," Shah said at an event in the national capital.

The party chose a busboy at the hotel where the programme was held to offer the first suggestion.

Broadly using Congress president Rahul Gandhi's strategy of meeting a cross-section of people — traders, farmers, students, teachers, academicians — and asking them to give concrete suggestions to draft election manifesto, the BJP plans to replicate the exercise on a wider scale.

Over 300 vehicles will move through 4,000 rallies across the country, carrying over 7,700 boxes to collect people's views, Shah said, adding that social media and phone calls would also be used to glean suggestions.

Shah, who is the head of the party's 'Sankalp Patra' committee, said never before had such a massive exercise to prepare a party manifesto been launched in a country. Union home minister Rajnath Singh also spoke at length about pro-farmer measures taken by the government, and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had emerged as the biggest well-wisher of farmers.
