The BJP and the Congress are trying to firm up alliances in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. After reports of the Congress reaching out to NDA constituent Apna Dal emerged, sources in the BJP said talks with the regional party are ongoing and that differences will be sorted out.

Sources in the BJP told DNA that they are amidst talks with a regional party, which holds sway in over six-seven seats in and around Mirzapur.

"Talks are going on and we are confident that we will be able to sort out our differences with them very soon. Some of their demands will be accommodated," said a BJP leader.

Within the Congress, sources said the party's general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, who is in-charge of UP East, has initiated talks with two more regional parties -- the Nishad Party and the Peace Party. Nishad Party, formed by former BSP leader Sanjay Nishad for the upliftment for OBCs in 2016, has been in alliance with Peace Party, which was floated by Mohamed Ayub in 2008. Both parties have an influence in the Gorakhpur area. Both parties have allied with the Samajwadi Party in the past.

In the 2018 by-elections in Gorakhpur, the united opposition fielded Nishad's son Praveen Kumar Nishad who won the seat with a margin of 21,000 votes from the BJP's Kaushalendra Singh Patel. The party had held the seat since 1989.

The BJP's alliance talks with the Omprakash Rajbhar-led Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party was completing fruition, said sources. But the recent flexing by the Apna Dal has no led to Rajbhar demanding more than the five seats it had asked for earlier. Apna Dal's Anupriya Patel, a minister of state in the Modi cabinet, has gone public with what she alleged was the mistreatment of smaller parties within the NDA.
