BJP can make cottage-industry out of selectively distorting my statements: Tharoor on 'chaiwala' remark

On November 13, Tharoor said, "If today we have a 'chaiwala' as Prime Minister, it's because Nehru ji made it possible to create the institutional structures through which any Indian can aspire to rise to the highest office in the land."

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday stood by his 'chaiwala' statement he had made on the eve of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's birth anniversary, which falls on November 14.

"PM Modi has always talked of his humble background, and I did the same. BJP is today in a condition that even if you drive safely on the road, they will come and purposely collide with you to make it look like an accident," Tharoor said.

On November 13, Tharoor said, "If today we have a 'chaiwala' as Prime Minister, it's because Nehru ji made it possible to create the institutional structures through which any Indian can aspire to rise to the highest office in the land."

The Lok Sabha MP from Kerala accused the BJP of 'making a cottage-industry out of selectively distorting sentences' from his speeches'.

Earlier, in response to Tharoor’s statement, Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said the Congress can’t think beyond one family. “If democracy is thriving in India, it’s because of the Constitution. It was the Constituent Assembly headed by Babasaheb Ambedkar and having many other eminent people which laid the foundation of democracy,” Javadekar said.

The parties are also embroiled in a controversy over the museum of prime ministers at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, housed at Teen Murti Bhavan in New Delhi. The museum, originally envisaged in memory of the first prime minister of India, has now been restructured by the Modi government to be in memory of all prime ministers.

Reacting on the controversy, Javadekar said the BJP is not undermining Nehru’s legacy. “We are making memorials of all prime ministers in the complex where Nehru lived. This is to pay tribute to everybody. It is not undermining. All prime ministers have contributed to this country. But that goes beyond one family and that is why the Congress is upset,” he said.
