The Bharatiya Janata Party has trained its guns on Rahul Gandhi over his citizenship and educational qualifications following a complaint against the Congress president. The complaint has been made by Dhruv Lal, who is fighting as an independent from the Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

The returning officer Ram Manohar Mishra has decided to postpone scrutiny of Gandhi's papers to Monday.

Dhruv Lal's complaint said that the Rahul Gandhi's election affidavit made no mention of his assets and properties in UK that he may have owned between 2003 and 2009.

BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said that the allegations against Gandhi are serious and asked the Congress president to come clean on them. Rao also said it was stunning that Gandhi's lawyer sought time to respond on the complaint.

"These are serious allegations. Is Rahul Gandhi an Indian citizen or not? Did he ever become a British citizen? He should come out with the real story," he said. Rao claimed that in 2004 Gandhi had invested in a British company and in official papers submitted to British authorities he had stated that he was a British citizen. "We will like to know if Rahul Gandhi goes by multiple names in different countries," Rao added.

BJP's allegations and attack on Rahul Gandhi came in the backdrop of a petition that was filed before the Supreme Court earlier on Monday that sought an investigation into alleged non-disclosure of assets by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his election affidavits.
